Wildlife officials were able to rescue two young elephants who fell into a hole in Sri Lanka and remained there for three hours. Wildlife officials had to use a bulldozer to open a passage through which the two cubs could escape. One of them emerged from the hole immediately and was reunited with his mother, but the other cub needed a bulldozer to help him and once out he refused to leave the area. The two young children fell into the hole on private land. Local residents said that the mother elephant tried to save them but failed. After the rescue efforts ended, villagers and wildlife officials said they used loud fireworks to force the two cubs to return to the forest, where they joined their mothers.
