A new study has found that learning a second language can improve brain health in older adults. The researchers say that you don’t have to be fluent in a second language to reap the benefits. The simple act of studying another language is enough to sharpen your cognitive skills. 76 adults between the ages of 65-75 took part in the study. None of the participants had studied another language before. After 16 weeks of study, participants showed improvements in their working memory and executive function. A large number of previous studies have found that being totally bilingual can help prevent or delay the onset of dementia. We can choose to learn another language at any age to reap some of the cognitive benefits enjoyed by bilingual individuals, Dr. Ellen Bialystok, Research Professor at York University
