If you’re a mom then you’ve likely heard the term ‘mommy brain’ before and come to dislike it. 'Mommy brain' is the idea that mothers are less attentive and more forgetful than others. Mom’s will be glad to know that new research has proved that ‘mommy brain’ isn’t real. Previous research on the topic was done “very early postpartum” which researchers believe affected the results. When you first have a child, you have a cascade of hormones and sleep deprivation that might be affecting attention and memory processes in the brain, Valerie Tucker Miller, Ph.D. student. This study was conducted using 60 mothers at least 1 year postpartum and 70 non-mothers. They found that overall moms didn’t have different or worse attention than non-mothers, . Meaning there’s no evidence to suggest ‘mommy brain’ is real. Researchers believe it's just a “culture-bound phenomenon”. The women were asked to do a response test that looked at the 3 networks of attention. The 3 networks of attention being alerting, orienting, and executive control. They found that moms had similar orienting attention but better executive control attention than non-mothers. The mothers were also less distracted during the tests than non-mothers.
