Researchers analyzed the music choices of guests on the British radio program ‘Desert Island Discs’.They found that the music we listen to between the ages of 10 and 30 defines us for the rest of our lives.The BBC Radio 4 program asks guests to imagine they’re being sent to a desert island.They then have to choose 8 records to bring with them to the island.The choices of 80 guests from the show were analyzed to discover how people choose music that’s important to them.They found that half of all music choices were important to the guests when they were between 10-30 years old.This is known as the ‘self-defining’ stage because it’s when we make important memories that support our sense of self.17% of guests chose a song because it reminded them of their relationship with a specific person.16.2% chose a song because it reminded them of a specific period of time like their childhood.12.9% chose a song as it has a strong connection with the formation of their identity.For example, Bruce Springsteen chose “I want to hold your hand” by the Beatles, as it inspired him to play the guitar
