Researchers have found that cats or dogs on popular vegan or raw diets could be at risk of health problems. Over the last decade, more and more pets have been eating similar meals to their owners, as opposed to traditional pet food. "These 'unconventional' diets may help nurture the bond between pets and their owners, but they may also be storing up health problems for these animals," Dr. Sarah Dodd, University of Guelph Ontario Veterinary College. It was found that only 13% of 3,100 surveyed pet owners feed their cat or dog a conventional diet. Instead, most pets are being fed homemade food or alternative diets of vegan, grain-free, or raw foods. 60% of dogs and 40% of cats had diets that included at least some homemade food. Meanwhile, one in five dogs are fed an exclusively vegan or vegetarian diet. "Home-made raw food diets pose an additional risk of infection in the absence of chemical or heat treatment steps to kill potentially harmful bacteria," Dr. Sarah Dodd, University of Guelph Ontario Veterinary College. The researchers say it is important for pet owners to be educated on how best to meet the nutritional needs of their animals
