Just one week after the total value of the shares of the American technology giant "Apple" exceeded one trillion dollars, Amazon jumped to the list to become the second company in the world whose share capital reached one trillion dollars as well, and to occupy second place in the stock market. Amazon owns 487,741,189 shares, and a 2 percent increase on Tuesday raised the value of the stock to $2,035.64, making the company's total value exceed one trillion dollars. Apple surpassed this number a week ago after a 4.5 percent increase in the value of its single share last week. Amazon recorded remarkable growth in the field of web services it provides, and the business sector grew by approximately 50% in the second quarter of this year. The last seven days witnessed continuous increases in the value of the company's shares, reaching 72 billion US dollars in the last trading days. Amazon shares swelled more than 70 percent in 2018 and have more than doubled in the past 12 months. These numbers exceed the total increases that occurred in the rest of the markets as a whole, as the Standard & Poor's 500 index, for example, rose by 8 percent this year and 16 percent in the past 12 months. Microsoft and Alphabet (Google) occupy third and fourth places, respectively, while Facebook ranks sixth.
