The Saudi Arabian transfer window has closed, bringing an end to its limitless spending on some of Europe’s finest talents. Saudi Pro League clubs spent a combined $978.5 million during this summer’s transfer window, excluding the pay packages. 87% of the spending came from Al-Hilal, Al-Ahli, Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr, which are all owned by the country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). Al-Hilal spent $377 million, acquiring Neymar Jr, Kalidou Koulibaly, Milinkovic-Savic, Malcolm, Ruben Neves and Alexander Mitrovic. Al-Nassr started the crusade on Europe earlier in the year by signing Cristiano Ronaldo, who became a pioneer for moves to the Gulf region. They also picked up Sadio Mane, Marcelo Brozovic, Aymeric Laporte, Alex Telles and Seko Fofana. Al-Ahli brought in Roberto Firmino, along with buying Riyad Mahrez, Edouard Mendy, Allan Saint-Maximin, Franck Kessie and Yacine Bounou. Al-Ittihad tried to make the signing of the summer by acquiring Mohamed Salah from Liverpool before having multiple bids rejected. They did, however, get Ngolo Kante, Fabinho, Jota and the blockbuster signing of Karim Benzema, who is set to earn $214 million a year. Despite there being only four clubs bankrolled by the state, other clubs in the league did their best to compete. Al-Ettifaq appointed Stephen Gerrard as manager and bought Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum. Demarai Gray, Moussa Dembele and Jack Hendry also made the move to The Commandos, who look to battle it out with the big spenders.
