The European Union is calling on Facebook, Twitter, and Google to become more accountable for the spread of fake news. Senior EU officials have said the companies should start producing monthly reports on their fight against misinformation. The comments were made by Josep Borrell and Věra Jourová in a press conference on June 10. They would like these reports to contain details on the companies actions to promote trustworthy content. As well as details on how they are limiting disinformation and related advertising. Jourová said fake news can “undermine the response of the public authorities and therefore weaken the health measures”. Borrell agreed, saying that "disinformation in times of coronavirus can kill”. Jourová revealed that TikTok have signed a voluntary code of conduct on how to fight disinformation. This has also been signed by Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Mozilla. The code touches on fake accounts, and demonetizing those who profit on fake news.
