Amid a conflict that has been ongoing with Internet and telecommunications providers for years, the mayor of Timisoara, located in western Romania, Nicola Rubu, decided on Tuesday, March 19, to cut Internet cables in the city after Internet operators ignored the local law that forces them to move the cables, bury them underground, and hide them. Speaking to Euronews, Robbo said, “Local law forces Internet, television, and telephone service providers to place cables underground. Over the past several years, telecommunications operators have ignored the city council’s repeated requests to move these cables underground,” adding, “I acted to protect the public sphere, and to prove that no one can vandalize this city.” Eight Internet providers in the country were affected as a result of the decision taken by Robo to cut cables. Internet providers had complained in the past that the local administration had not yet provided the infrastructure to transport their cables underground. Not only internet providers were affected by this decision, as many secondary schools and the Timis District Inspection School remained without internet while their students were taking the official nationwide baccalaureate exam, and these schools were forced to take the necessary and alternative measures to ensure communication with the Ministry of Education and access to exam materials. In addition, almost the entire population of the central region remained without Internet and television services. In a statement on Facebook, the mayor said that he would not stop cutting cables any time soon. He added in an interview with local media that dissatisfied customers should direct their anger towards telecom operators and not the municipality.
